Samsung is pushing glasses-free 3D gaming back into the spotlight. The company says that more than 120 games will support its new 3D monitor technology by the end of the year, expanding the ecosystem around its Odyssey 3D display.
The goal is simple: bring immersive 3D gaming to players without requiring special glasses.
What the Technology Does
Samsung’s system uses a combination of hardware and software to create a stereoscopic 3D effect directly on the monitor.
Key components include:
- Eye-tracking sensors that detect where the player is looking
- View mapping algorithms that adjust depth dynamically
- A special display layer that sends slightly different images to each eye
This creates the illusion of depth, allowing game elements to appear closer or farther away from the screen.
Gaming Specs
The monitor still targets high-end gaming performance, including:
- 4K resolution
- 165Hz refresh rate
- 1ms response time
This means the 3D effect is designed to work without sacrificing smooth gameplay.
Expanding Game Support
Samsung is building a supported game ecosystem through the Odyssey 3D Hub, a platform that enables compatible titles to run in 3D.
Current status:
- 60+ supported games available now
- 120+ games expected by the end of the year
Some upcoming titles expected to support the feature include:
- Hell Is Us
- Cronos: The New Dawn
3D gaming has struggled in the past due to:
- Glasses requirements
- Limited game support
- Comfort issues for players
Samsung’s approach aims to remove the biggest barrier the need to wear 3D glasses.
Whether this new generation of displays will bring 3D gaming back into the mainstream remains to be seen, but Samsung is clearly betting on a larger ecosystem of compatible games to make it viable.
