- Description: Master of the Line is an upcoming single-player Age of Sail RPG built around one central idea: what if the ships, sails, rigging and destruction actually behaved physically?

Most sailing games treat a ship like a vehicle with a health bar. **Master of the Line** is trying something different: making the ship itself part of the simulation.

Developed by solo programmer **Alex Reed of SplinterByte Games**, this upcoming single-player Age of Sail RPG is being built around physics. Sails and rigging react to wind and movement, cannonballs are physical projectiles, and damage is intended to affect the actual structure of a ship rather than simply remove hit points.

That could make every battle unpredictable.

A cannonball might damage rigging, tear through part of the vessel, or leave the ship fighting in a completely different state from when the battle began.

But the simulation doesn't stop outside the ship.

Players will be able to move around their vessel in first person, walk below deck, operate weapons, take the helm, and experience battles from aboard the ship rather than watching everything from an external camera.

Behind it all is Reed's own custom-built engine, developed alongside the game to handle ocean rendering, weather, lighting, ship physics, rope and sail simulation, and destruction.

It's an ambitious project for a solo developer, and it's still early. Some current visuals use purchased assets while the underlying technology continues to evolve.

But after years of development behind the scenes, **Master of the Line is finally stepping into the spotlight**—with one simple goal: to make you feel like you're actually standing aboard a sailing warship.

**Master of the Line is currently in development for PC.**
